Dann Pantoja is beginning to use his Tagalog indigenous name -- Lakan Sumulong. This is a statement that our indigenous identities can be a redeeming factor in healing our 'being' (that is, who we are as a people); help symbolize our determination to contribute what we ought to be 'doing' as a nation (that is--active, non-violent, radical transformation); and, determine how we will prioritize what we will be 'having' (that is, inclusive growth and national development based on justice and peace). Asked what fuels his positive outlook in life: “It’s the influence of Jesus, a first century Palestinian carpenter who was executed by the imperial power of his time. He said: ‘Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.’ Jesus defied the ultimate negative factor in our cosmos--death.”

I was taking pictures of one of the Kadayawan dance groups in Davao City. The face of a woman dancer caught my attention. I felt in her facial expression what I’ve been hearing from certain leaders of the Lumad or Indigenous Peoples in Mindanao with whom I interact: “Listen! Hear my voice! Listen to my angry heart. Stop lecturing on us! You’ve been killing our people. Stop killing us! You’ve been pitting us against each other. Stop dividing us! You’ve been destroying our mountains and rivers. Stop stealing our lands!”

CANADIAN MINING INDUSTRY AND PEACEBUILDING IN THE PHILIPPINES
Mining is one of the major factors causing violent conflicts and environmental devastation in the Philippines. This is specially true among the Indigenous Peoples’ ancestral domains. Canadian corporations are a major player in the mining industry in this country. Social and environmental activists call on mining corporations, including Canadian companies, to stop the destructive impacts of their business activities in the Philippines. They also call on the government to repeal the current pro-business and anti-people laws that allow the destructive impacts of mining in our country.

EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS AND THE U.S. MIDTERM ELECTION
My heart and mind reject the American use of the term ‘evangelical’ to describe a segment of U.S. population whose behavior and voice demonstrate racism and bigotry — against those whose skin color are not white; against those outside the Christian religion; and, against those outside the imagined boundaries of a stolen Turtle Island now referred to by the colonizers as the United States of America.

FROM GEOPOLITICAL THINKING TO BIOSPHERE CONSCIOUSNESS: A NEW CONTEXT FOR PAR
Our younger leaders are pushing me to help prepare them to carry Peace and Reconciliation (PAR) Principles, our contextual application of a peace theology, into the emerging realities of the 21st century. So, I’m exploring the ideas of Jeremy Rifkin who challenges humanity to “enter into a new world of biosphere politics, with new forms of governance emerging to accompany our new biosphere awareness.”

The Bangsamoro and Beyond: A National Conversation is a televised discussion between representative members of various sections of society pertaining to the Bangsamoro transition. Joji was chosen to represent the new Christian migrant in Mindanao as a woman engaged in building peace with the Bangsamoro through social enterprise and inclusive development.

REFLECTIVE NOTES DURING A PARADOXICAL DAY OF MARRIAGE- AND LIFE-CELEBRATION
This morning, Joji and I celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary. We did this in the midst of sadness because her mother passed away three days ago. We helped in leading the funeral services. What a paradoxical day!
