FROM WASHINGTON TO MANILA: THE GLOBAL FALLOUT OF AMERICAN-INFLUENCED EVANGELICAL COMPLICITY

This prophetic-theological critique argues that the U.S. National Prayer Breakfast, rather than serving as a space for moral accountability and humility before God, has increasingly functioned as a ritual that blesses political power—especially through white evangelical leaders’ unwavering support for Donald Trump—thereby undermining Christian credibility both in the United States and globally. Drawing on biblical prophetic traditions and contemporary data showing evangelical alignment with a leader widely perceived as unethical, the essay contends that prayer divorced from justice becomes complicity rather than witness. The participation of Filipino evangelical leaders intensifies this crisis, as their presence signals alignment with a politicized form of Christianity that risks being imported into the Philippine context. The result is a weakened Christian witness marked by moral inconsistency and public disillusionment, as faith becomes entangled with political expediency. The essay ultimately calls for repentance rather than rebranding, urging evangelical leaders—American and Filipino alike—to reclaim a prophetic faith that speaks truth to power and restores prayer as an act of justice-centered faithfulness.

XI JINPING – DONALD TRUMP MEETING IN BUSAN: HOPEFUL LESSONS FOR THE PHILIPPINES

There are moments in global politics when a small spark of hope shines through the heavy fog of rivalry. The recent meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in Busan, South Korea, felt like one of those moments to me. On October 30, 2025, the two leaders met face-to-face for the first time since 2019—this time amid the strains of economic sanctions, trade wars, and intensifying competition across Asia (ABC News, 2025; Reuters, 2025). Held during the APEC Summit 2025, their nearly two-hour conversation seemed to ease some of the bitterness that has long defined U.S.–China relations. Reports from Reuters and The Guardian confirmed that both sides agreed to reduce damaging trade barriers and reopen cooperation in key sectors like agriculture and critical minerals (The Guardian, 2025; Reuters, 2025).

THE CROSS AND THE NATION: A CANADIAN REFLECTION AMID TARIFFS AND TURBULENCE

As Canadians wake up to the economic uncertainties stirred by protectionist policies from our neighbor and largest trading partner, the United States—particularly under the renewed threats of tariffs by US President Donald Trump—a deeper national introspection is warranted. It is in moments like these, when the ground beneath us seems to shift, that sacred texts offer more than spiritual comfort; they present frameworks for national reflection and transformation. Jesus offers a vivid image of growth through surrender: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). This imagery is striking, not only in its spiritual implications but also in its relevance to the soul of a nation confronting change, pressure, and adversity.

I APPLAUD THE POSITION OF 'CHRISTIANITY TODAY' THAT TRUMP SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE

Finally, a big burden had been lifted from our shoulders! Christianity Today (CT) magazine declared that Donald Trump, who got elected by most white evangelicals, “should be removed from office.” As evangelical Christians working side-by-side in doing justice and peace advocacies with Muslims, Indigenous Peoples, Mainline Protestants, Catholics, and non religious people, we have been embarrassed by the actions of American evangelicals who have been blindly supporting Trump.
