10-13 September 2019. Sihaya Ansibod, our Director of Field Operations, invited me to travel with her team. First, we met with our partners among the Erumanen Ne Menuvu tribe on Mt. Agkir-Agkir. Then we visited the Iranun coffee farmers in Alamada who invited us to market their coffee. Afterwards, we responded to an invitation of a Maguindanao farming community who envisions to develop a Robusta coffee plantation near Ligawasan Marshlands. Finally, we sealed our partnership with the Obo Bagobo coffee farmers in Ilomavis at the foot of Mt. Apo.

Wanay Baluyan is a new graduate of our PeaceBuilders School of Leadership (PBSL). She’s a native of the Banao Tribe from the Cordillera Region in the northern part of the Philippines. Part of her training at PBSL was to get immersed cross-culturally with another tribe. As a result, she was ritually adopted by the Tagabawa Bagobo Tribe from the Southern Mindanao Region. This relationship contributes to inter-tribal solidarity among various Indigenous Peoples struggling for their right to self-determination. She wrote her story just before she went back home to her native community.

The Tagabawa Tribal Council of Barangay Alegre welcomed the Inclusive Development Team of PeaceBuilders Community, Inc. (PBCI) and Coffee For Peace (CFP) to establish a model coffee farm in their area. We went through the process of Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) as required by law. The municipal, provincial, and national authorities protecting the Indigenous Peoples’ rights gave their respective affirmations and blessings to this project.

Wanay S. Baluyan, a native of Banao Indigenous People from Kalinga Province, is defending her final paper to conclude a two-year internship under the PeaceBuilders School of Leadership (PBSL) program. She’s a Registered Nurse and chose to serve her community and the Cordillera People in their journey towards genuine autonomy and self-determination.

Emil Jonathan “Jon” Soriano is a member of the Justice, Peace, and Reconciliation Commission (JPARCom) of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC). JPARCom, along with PeaceBuilders Community, have been laboring to promote peace and reconciliation between armed-conflicting parties in the Philippines. Jon attended the 2nd Global Mennonite Peacebuilding (2GMP) Conference and Festival held last 26-30 June 2019 in The Netherlands. He shared his reflection with us.

Joji flew to Amsterdam to join her colleagues serving with the Peace Commission of the Mennonite World Conference (MWC). Their meetings were held back-to-back with the Global Mennonite Peacebuilding Conference and Festival. The highlight of her trip was the launching of the Global Anabaptist Peace Network.
