Dann Pantoja

Dann Pantoja is beginning to use his Tagalog indigenous name -- Lakan Sumulong. This is a statement that our indigenous identities can be a redeeming factor in healing our 'being' (that is, who we are as a people); help symbolize our determination to contribute what we ought to be 'doing' as a nation (that is--active, non-violent, radical transformation); and, determine how we will prioritize what we will be 'having' (that is, inclusive growth and national development based on justice and peace). Asked what fuels his positive outlook in life: “It’s the influence of Jesus, a first century Palestinian carpenter who was executed by the imperial power of his time. He said: ‘Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.’ Jesus defied the ultimate negative factor in our cosmos--death.”

I’M PRAYING FOR FAITH, EVEN AS SMALL AS A MUSTARD SEED

…Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.   Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 17:20b NIV) Was Jesus exaggerating? The context of this statement was a story of a boy with …

A REFLECTION ON THE MEANING OF OUR FAMILY CREST

Several years ago, I adopted this Pantoja Crest because I love what it means. I started wearing it and has been consistently displaying it in my communication media. One Muslim friend got scared when he saw me wear this insignia: “It’s the symbol of Crusaders! Those Christians killed so many Muslims and took our lands …

THE AMPATUAN MASSACRE: JUSTICE DELAYED, JUSTICE DENIED

I was there the day after it happened.  They were still digging up the bodies of the 57 people who were tortured and murdered in the Municipality of Ampatuan, Province of Maguindanao, in the southern island of the Philippines called Mindanao. Scared.  Angry. Frustrated. Such mixed feelings brought me to my knees in prayer. That …

ON GAZA AND ISRAEL: PEACE IS POSSIBLE!

Justice and peace are major aspects of the character of YHWH–the God of Israel. In the Tanak (Old Testament), YHWH implemented Divine Discipline among all nations. Blessings to those who obey God’s justice and peace. Curses to those who violated God’s justice and peace, including Israel. I believe in the statement in Genesis 12:1-3: “And I …
